Dress Making Evening Class

I love crafts, I’ve taught myself to cross stitch to patterns, to design my own cross stitches, to embroider, to crochet and knit, but one thing I could never quite get my head around was making clothing. So I recently signed up to do a clothes making evening course at my local adult education centre to help me learn how to read and use patterns!

I have been to two weeks classes, and so far I’ve cut my fabric. It’s a lot more complicated than I thought, but it’s so much easier watching someone do it than trying to work it out myself, and have someone to ask when I’m not sure.

This is the pattern I’m using, I got it free in an issue of Love Sewing Magazine. It’s not a great one to use because it doesn’t have a great amount of detail on it like commercial patterns do and she’s teaching us all about that, but it’ll do, and I’ll get a proper one next time.

The other great thing about going to the class is that we can get practical help from our tutor, she took my measurements and my bust and waist are one size, and my hips come up 3 sizes bigger! This is one of the problems I find when trying to make (or generally wear!!!!) clothes. So she is going to help me adjust the pattern and fit it to me. So far I’ve cut out the fabric and am working on making ‘tailors tacks’ along the dart lines, which are marks made using contrasting thread, rather than pen or nothing at all. Who knew sewing could be so technical!!

Got to do the rest of the tailors tacks now, as homework, so I can start sewing next class!! Just about to get that done while watching a nice Sunday afternoon film- ‘Dude, Where’s My Car?’ Haha!

Merry Christmas… ya filthy animal

It’s maybe a little late for this but it’s still 2014 for a few more hours!! This took me so long that by the time I had finished it was too late to sell it… and also I wasn’t sure I wanted to be parted from it!!! I’ll try to make some more for next Christmas.

I wish you all a very happy new year!

Crafty Catch Up Club

Thursday evening I met with a great bunch of people at the Crafty Catch Up Club, organised by @ladybirdlikes (and if you want to get involved look her up on instagram or facebook). It was downstairs at the Hawkhurst Vault tea shop in Brick Lane.

I didn’t stay too long because I’d had a long day and was feeling really sleepy! It was nice to meet some other crafty types and hear about what they do, and I’m looking forward to next time!!

Zoe (aka Ladybird Likes) really sweetly made everyone a goody bag, and @creightonschocolaterie bought a chocolate lucky cat for everyone too!

Spearmint Sewing Machine

So I finally treated myself to this John Lewis sewing machine I’ve had my eye on for a while. I was trying to make my cat a neck tie (!) with my old machine and I just couldn’t make it work so the next day I went out and bought this! It was only £99 and I had £30 voucher that I hadn’t yet used from Christmas. It’s really great, I’m sewing again!!

Josie Makes… Blackwork B

I had been wanting to try Blackwork for a while, so decided to turn it into a gift for my friend Bethany for Christmas.

I really enjoyed making this, it is along the same lines as cross stitch, but just with backstitch, the repetitive pattern meant that once I had started on the pattern filling I didn’t have to look back at my design again and again, I was stitching this on the train, on my lunch break at work and even at the pub quiz! I used an evenweave fabric, a cream colour with glints of metallic gold!

Josie Makes… A5 Graph Paper Notebook

To design cross stitch patterns I use graph paper such as in the photo above. The only form I have found this in is A4 refill pads, and I have been searching for a smaller notebook with this paper with no luck. So I decided to create my own.

Click ‘Continue Reading’ for instructions on how to make it.
